Saying Yes

At the council meeting a few weeks ago - the council meeting at which I was asked several questions and during which the council of Harderwyk CRC voted to let the congregation vote on whether or not to extend me a call - in that council meeting both of the pastors of the other communities of Harderwyk prayed: "Lord, help us to say 'yes' before we know what we are saying 'yes' to."

And I've just done just that.

I sent the letter of acceptance today. Here is what I wrote:

Dear Brothers and Sisters at Harderwyk Christian Reformed Church; especially those of the Celebration congregation,

It is with solid trust in our God and with complete confidence in the guidance of the Holy Spirit that I accept the call to become your pastor.

Over the last week and a half, Tim and I have had many conversations – with God, with each other, with our family and friends, and with members of Harderwyk. We have also received several phone calls and letters from many of you. Through these communications, God spoke with the kind of clarity and consistency that can only come from God. We believe that in your call God himself is calling. Once we made the decision to accept the call, Tim and I experienced the peace that passes understanding.

I pray for that same peace to reign in your midst as we look forward to the time when we enter ministry together: studying the Word together, reaching the lost together, singing and praying together, and comforting others with the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

Your Sister in Christ,

Pastor Heidi

After I wrote the letter, I grabbed Samara in a big hug and said, "Mommy is going to be a pastor in a church!" And immediately Samara said, "Shoes on?! Nursery?!" and ran to get her shoes from her bedroom.

She's ready to go. We'll be ready soon.

I am so happy for you, yet sad for our church. Hardwyk will be gaining a wonderful family, but Faith will be losing one. Good luck!!

congratulations, Heidi...such good news for you all! I don't know if I understand that first part though, the, "Lord, help us to say 'yes' before we know what we are saying 'yes' to."???

I hope the transition is smooth...

Great news! The call, your acceptance, and the clarity of God's voice! You'll be in my prayers as you make this major transition!

the saying 'yes' before knowing ... basically - I think what Trent and Philip (the other pastors) meant by it - and what I mean by it is that there is a sense in which you obviously can't know the extent and the depth and the breadth and the particulars of what you're agreeing to do - and yet, in obedience and trust, you say yes, because you sense that God is calling you and that you must do this thing. It's the taking-a-step-of-faith thing. is that helpful?
